Fall of 2023 was my first semester in the Industrial Deign major at Ohio State. To establish the basics of product visualization all first year Industrial Design majors are enrolled in a drawing class that focuses specifically on the fundamentals of product drawing. Below are a few selected ideations from this class from various assignments.
Perfume Bottle Ideation
Our longest-running project in this class involved redesigning the average perfume bottle. This project pushed me to think about the ergonomics, mechanisms, and liquid contents of a bottle of perfume. I was most interested in the concept of creating a perfume bottle that followed the form of a knot. In the drawing below I experimented with form, cap placement, and the orientation of the perfume liquid inside of the bottle.
Ultimately I settled on a bottle that fit easily into the palm of the users hand. I also decided to keep the liquid in the bottom bulb of the form to keep the bottle from toppling over. Lastly, I utilized a dropper tool for the actual perfume application. I felt that this application was best because it utilized the top portion of the bottle, which would otherwise be obsolete.
Exploration into the orientation of the perfume bottle, the type of knot utilized, the cap mechanism, and the internal liquid storage.
Final bottle concept showing applicator, scale, profiles, and liquid storage.
Brand Identity Visualization - Converse
Our drawing curriculum also focused heavily on identifying and understanding brand identity. One project in particular asked us to choose and brand and identify key aspects of its brand identity, language, and makeup. I chose Converse for this activity, as they have a brand identity that is truly iconic.
Then, I applied this same brand identity to two items completely distinct from those that Converse sells. I chose a rock climbing harness and a sewing machine. Below you can see how I applied elements of the Converse brand in three distinct ways to each of these products.
